Local Information about Lowestoft and the local area.

Map of LowestoftThe Lowestoft, Southwold and North Suffolk area encompasses a wide, varied and interesting range of attractions for the whole family to enjoy.  Lowestoft and North Suffolk are easy to reach, but unspoilt by major roads. The area has a nostalgic feel about it, it has been described as 2 hours and fifty years away from London.   Lowestoft has been a thriving coastal community for a long time .  The town has major fishing and maritime connections that are represented throughout the area's museums.  The area has a number of traditional villages, old churches, and country pubs that have remained unchanged.

Lowestoft has a historic High Street with the original main centre of Lowestoft being encompassed by the historic north end of old Lowestoft.  Lowestoft has a Lighthouse and the 'Scores' that are the historical gateways from the town down to the 'old fishermen's Beach Village'.

Lowestoft has a population of about 75,000 and is Suffolk's second largest town.  Lowestoft is a red-brick 19th century town. The original town was at the heart of a cluster of villages that have been absorbed into the town.  As a consequence the town has seven medieval churches.  Lowestoft Borough is split in two by the River Lothing. The old town centre, and modern shopping centre, is to the north. The the beaches and boarding houses are situated to the south of the river.   Lowestoft has the best beaches in Suffolk, and they're also much better than those so-called golden sands ten miles north at Great Yarmouth.  In 2006, five of the local beaches won awards because they achieved the highest levels of cleanliness and safety possible. Lowestoft North of Claremont Pier, Lowestoft South of Claremont Pier and Southwold Pier Resort beaches were each awarded an ENCAMS Blue Flag Award and ENCAMS Seaside (Resort) Award. Kessingland and Southwold Denes Rural beaches were awarded an ENCAMS Seaside (Rural) Award.
The beaches are gently sloping golden and are ideal to relax on and for children to play safely.

The local schools maintain a traditional feel and information can be found at Suffolk County Council Education Department  and Norfolk County Council Education Department.
